The Embekke Sri Katharagama Devalaya is nestled in the picturesque village of Embekke in the Kandy district of Sri Lanka's Central Province.

To get there, you can choose between two routes: one from Peradeniya via Buwelikada, and the other from Pilimathalawa.

This remarkable site is steeped in legend and is believed to have been established in the 16th century, following the Portuguese invasion of Sri Lanka.

Enclosed by a sturdy wall, the premises feature several structures both within and outside the enclosure. The main attraction is the Katharagama Devalaya, which stands as the centerpiece of the complex. Upon entering, visitors are greeted by the Hevisi Mandapaya, a stunning pavilion supported by 32 wooden columns, adorned with 514 intricate wood carvings. Each column culminates in four-sided triangular pillars, adding to the architectural beauty.

In addition to the main shrine, the complex includes:

- A paddy storage building, known as the "wee atuwa"

- A moonstone, or "Sandakada pahana"

- An ancient kitchen

- A temple

- An entrance building, called "Wahalkada"

Embekke is renowned for its exquisite wooden carvings, showcasing a variety of themes that reflect the artistry of the era. Among the notable carvings are depictions of:

- Wrestling scenes

- Traditional games involving wooden rods, known as lee keli

- Archers in action
