The Kanniya Hot Water Springs, located just a few kilometers from Trincomalee city, are a collection of seven natural hot springs renowned for their therapeutic properties and rich history. Each spring is enclosed within a small brick square structure, forming a cluster of distinct wells. Remarkably, the water temperature varies slightly from one well to another, despite their close proximity.

Rooted deeply in Hindu mythology, the origin of the springs is tied to the Ramayana epic. According to legend, King Ravana created the wells with his sword to perform the funeral rites for his mother, after being unable to find water elsewhere. Because of this sacred connection, local communities have used the site for generations to perform ancestral rituals.

The water is rich in natural minerals, making it a popular spot for travelers and locals seeking a refreshing bath to relieve skin ailments, muscle pain, and fatigue. Visitors use buckets to scoop the naturally warm water over themselves. Managed today as an important archaeological site, Kanniya remains a must-visit cultural and wellness destination in eastern Sri Lanka.
